FoxSports.comCalifornia: One of the most interesting non-conference battles of the first few weeks, Cal can make a big splash with a win, while Tennessee can show things have rebounded from last year. SEC fans might not want to believe this, but Cal is the better team. It'll take at least a game for the Vol offense to get back into the swing of things. Unfortunately, the fantastic Bear back seven won't accommodate.Fearless mid-August Prediction: California 23 ... Tennessee 14

FoxSports.comGeorgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets showed what they could do in openers shocking Auburn last year. Now they'll try to ruin Notre Dame's national title hopes before they can begin. Expect another shocker. Georgia Tech's offense is nowhere near good enough to keep up if the Irish attack is humming, but the Yellow Jacket defense should keep things from getting out of hand. Reggie Ball is an experienced enough quarterback to not make too many mistakes. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Georgia Tech 23 ... Notre Dame 21

Florida St. vs. Miami (FL)8/30/2006
FoxSports.comMiami (FL): It's a shame this isn't played after the two superpowers get a few tuneups. While it won't be the ugly slopfest last year's "classic" was, don't expect either side to be all that sharp. Will the loss of WR Ryan Moore and RB Tyrone Moss keep Miami's offense from doing anything for a second straight year against the Miami? Not really. They wouldn't have made that much of a difference anyway. Florida State hasn't beaten Miami in the Orange Bowl since 1998, and the Cane defense are going to make sure the streak lasts. These are two national title-caliber defenses that'll play up to the hype.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Miami 17 ... Florida State 13

Ohio St. vs. Texas8/30/2006
FoxSports.comTexas: The one everyone is waiting for since last year's classic 25-22 Longhorn win. With the Buckeyes ranked first in the Coaches' Poll and the Longhorns second, this will be for the right to be the lead dog in the race for a spot in the BCS Championship game. The winner is guaranteed to be playing for the title if it keeps on inning. Texas is better than it's being given credit for (even with the lofty early rankings) with many thinking it was all Vince Young last season. Everything else is in place including a defense that can keep Troy Smith from exploding, while the two-headed quarterbacking tandem of Jevan Sneed and Colt McCoy will be just good enough to make a few big plays at home against the very talented, but very green OSU defensive back seven. FoxSports.comNotre Dame: These two giants haven't played since the classing 17-16 Irish win in 1992. Notre Dame has to follow this up with a battle with Michigan, but it'll be able to simply outscore the Nittany Lions. Don't completely discount the Penn State offense, but the Irish will have too much firepower.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Notre Dame 27 ... Penn State 17

FoxSports.comFlorida: Always one of the first big SEC games of the year, this will either be when Urban Meyer's Gators take a first step to a huge season or when Tennessee officially announces that 2005 was an aberration. If the Vols lose to Cal in the season opener, this will be a must-win for Phil Fulmer. He won't get it. With all the talk about Meyer's offense, it's his defense that'll make the most noise this year with a front four that'll be camped out in the Volunteer backfield.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Florida 17 ... CollegeFootballNews.comAuburn:

FoxSports.comAuburn: Not just potentially for the SEC West title, this should play a big role in the national championship race. Auburn will be a bit more battle tested having played Washington State and at Mississippi State, and LSU will have its biggest road test yet in the young Les Miles era. Yeah, the Auburn version of the Tigers will be without linebackers Tray Blackmon and Kevin Sears, but there's more than enough athleticism and speed in the defensive back seven to make up for it. The Auburn offensive line will turn out to be the difference. The last two games between the two have been decided by a total of four points.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Auburn 19 ... LSU 17

CollegeFootballNews.comLouisville:
8/30/2006
FoxSports.comMiami (FL): If Louisville wants to be a player in the national title race, it has to come up with a big-time non-conference win. This will be a bigger game on a national scale than it'll initially get credit for. While the Cardinals have more than enough on offense, the Hurricane defensive back seven will control the game. You never want Miami coming into your house with an attitude, and it'll have a big one after hearing for a week how it'll be upset. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Miami 24 ... Louisville 23

FoxSports.comSouthern Cal: It's the first time these two have played since a 21-21 tie in 1970. A win for the Huskers would be a jump-start to national title hopes, while a USC win would show that it hasn't slipped despite losing all the stars in its backfield. While much will be made about the offenses, this will be about the defenses with the Nebraska front four likely to make life hellish for John David Booty and/or Mark Sanchez. The Troy D can also play a little; it's linebackers will be the difference.Fearless mid-August Prediction: USC 27 ... Nebraska 17

The Buckeyes had better win this with a road trip to Iowa the following week, while this is a must-win for the Nittany Lions with road trips still ahead to Minnesota and Wisconsin. OSU has been hearing about last year's game all off-season and will come out smoking. Troy Smith won't run wild on Paul Posluszny and the Penn State linebackers, but the rest of the Buckeye offense will do fine thanks to the line. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Ohio State 23 ... Ohio State will be coming off the Penn State game and will have to find more in the tank to come away with the win in what'll be a super-charged Kinnick Stadium. FoxSports.comTexas: This could be a preview of the Big 12 championship. The Huskers will be looking to win its only home game in a four game stretch, while Texas is kicking off a stretch of three road games in four. The Longhorns will have already played Ohio State and Oklahoma, and this game will be every bit as dangerous. If the Husker front four controls the game from the start, Bill Callahan's squad will pull off the upset. The Texas offensive line is too good to keep either from happening.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Texas 24 ... Nebraska 21

WEEK 10-
West Virginia vs. Louisville8/30/2006
FoxSports.comLouisville: This is the one Big Easters are drooling over. If all goes according to form, this might be for more than just the conference title with each team in a great position to be in the hunt for the BCS Championship game thanks to mediocre schedules. Everyone knows about the West Virginia running game, but the Cardinals with Michael Bush and Kolby Smith can also run a little bit. If this was in Morgantown, the Mountaineers would be the pick, but Louisville is a different team in Papa John's.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Louisville 31 ... West Virginia 20
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games

LSU vs. Tennessee8/30/2006
FoxSports.comTennessee: The Vols stunned the Tigers last year thanks to a second half LSU collapse. LSU will look for payback to be in the mix for the SEC title, but it won't get it. By early November, the Tennessee offense under coordinator David Cutcliffe will be back to being the Tennessee offense. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Tennessee 24 ... LSU 20
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games
-
Oklahoma vs. Texas A&M8/30/2006
FoxSports.comOklahoma: Outside of a date with Texas Tech, A&M has a light and breezy schedule up until the Sooners show up. After this, the Aggies play Nebraska and at Texas, and here's where the slide will start. By early November, the OU quarterback situation will be fine. A&M won't have an answer for Adrian Peterson.

Virginia Tech vs. Miami (FL)8/30/2006
FoxSports.comMiami (FL): The home team hasn't had much luck in this series over the last two years. In any event, it'll be a shock if this doesn't decide the Coastal Division champion in another memorable game. All the questions about the Hokie offensive backfield should be solved by early November, but it still won't be enough to overcome the Hurricane defense in the Orange Bowl. However, expect the Virginia Tech linebackers to make things rough for the Cane offense.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Miami 23 ... Virginia Tech 13

WEEK 11-
Alabama vs. LSU8/30/2006
FoxSports.comLSU: The loser will likely be out of the SEC West title hunt. LSU has won the last three meetings and will come up with a fourth straight victory thanks to a far more effective offense. The Tiger receivers should torch the Tide secondary.Fearless mid-August Prediction: LSU 21 ... Alabama 13
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games
-
Georgia vs. Auburn8/30/2006
FoxSports.comAuburn: This is what many thought last year's SEC title game should've been. The Tigers beat the Dawgs in Athens 31-30 in one of the year's best games, and it'll come up with another hard fought win. Kenny Irons might not run wild, but he won't have to carry the offense. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Auburn 20 ... Georgia 17
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games
-
South Carolina vs. Florida8/30/2006
FoxSports.comFlorida: Get the hype started now for Steve Spurrier's first game back in the Swamp; Urban Meyer had better win it. South Carolina beat the Gators 30-22 for its final win of last season, and it won't have the same luck this time around. The Florida front seven will stop the Gamecock offense cold.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Florida 27 ... South Carolina 10
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games

Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma8/30/2006
FoxSports.comOklahoma: This is the oasis in a middle of back-to-back two game road trips for the Sooners. You can bet there'll be plenty of talk about last year's controversial Red Raider win, and you can bet that OU will be really, really amped up. The Sooner pass rush will disrupt the high-octane Tech attack. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Oklahoma 31 ... Texas Tech 20

WEEK 12-
Auburn vs. Alabama8/30/2006
FoxSports.comAuburn: Always a classic, at least one of the two will be in a position to win the SEC West title. This is Auburn's only road date of note, and it just so happens to come in the final regular season game. The Tigers will make it five straight wins in the heated series with the defense overwhelming the Tide offense. The team that's most effective running the ball will win, and that'll be Auburn.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Auburn 13 ... Alabama 10
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games

California vs. Southern Cal8/30/2006
FoxSports.comSouthern Cal: Cal has usually been a thorn in USC's side. This time around, Cal might actually have the better team with a secondary that should all but close down the nation's best receiving corps. USC's linebackers will keep Marshawn Lynch in check while the secondary will force the turnovers at the right time to pull out the hard-fought battle.Fearless mid-August Prediction: USC 28 ... California 24

Michigan vs. Ohio St.8/30/2006
FoxSports.comOhio St.: Former Buckeye head man John Cooper was fired partly because he couldn't beat Michigan. Wolverine head man Lloyd Carr has lost four of his last five battles with the Buckeyes and could be in a little bit of trouble if he can't pull this one off. The Buckeyes should be coming into this on a roll playing Indiana, Minnesota, and at Northwestern before its big battle with Big Blue. All problems with the OSU defensive back seven should be solvedFearless mid-August Prediction: Ohio State 30 ... Michigan 20

WEEK 13-
Colorado vs. Nebraska8/30/2006
FoxSports.comNebraska: This always seems to play a big role in the battle for the North title. Colorado will look to avenge last year's 30-3 pasting, but it won't be able to with the Husker pass rush being too much for the Buffs to overcome.Fearless mid-August Prediction: Nebraska 31 ... Colorado 14
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games
-
Florida vs. Florida St.8/30/2006
FoxSports.comFlorida St.: The Gators pummeled the Noles last year, but that was a young, banged up FSU team. Both teams should be better this season with Drew Weatherford and the Seminole offense sure to be far, far more effective. Don't expect a lot of offensive fireworks, but look for Weatherford to outgun Chris Leak. The lack of a Florida running game will prove costly. Fearless mid-August Prediction: Florida State 20 ... Florida 17
Note: From article entitled: Fearless Predictions for 2006's biggest games
-
Notre Dame vs. Southern Cal8/30/2006
FoxSports.comSouthern Cal: Notre Dame has lost its last two games at USC by a combined score of 85-23. Just imagine the hype if both teams are unbeaten; it might be better than the national championship. By late November, all the kinks should be worked out of the USC offensive backfield, but Notre Dame still won't be much more talented on defense. This might be the make-or-break Heisman game for Brady Quinn, but the Trojans have just as much firepower and a far better defense. Fearless mid-August Prediction: USC 34 ... Notre Dame 30
